A Herbst functional appliance is typically utilized on children from the ages of 7-14 , depending on the individual case.

How Does it Work?

Patients who are still in the growth phase utilize this appliance to help with jaw growth correction and discrepancies.

What is it made of?

The appliance is made up of surgical-grade stainless steel which is cemented to the first permanent molars in a patient’s mouth. It also utilizes telescoping mechanisms to help modify Class II malocclusions by exerting upward and backward force on the upper jaw and a forward force on the lower jaw.

This is a prime example of why we recommend that children start their initial orthodontic check up around the age of 7, or when the first two front teeth come in.

Treatment Time?

Since the Herbst appliance is cemented permanently on the first molars, it works at all times. Typically, we recommend that patients use the appliance for a minimum of 12 months, with more advanced cases requiring additional time. If needed, stainless steel “shims” can be applied to create greater correction.

How to Clean it?

You can brush your teeth regularly with the Herbst appliance, while making sure to also clean the appliance itself using regular toothpaste and water. We also highly recommend using a Water Pik to thoroughly clean the area.

What to expect?

At the beginning of treatment, patients will notice the appliance in their mouth, specifically around their tongue and cheeks. Although speech obstruction and sensitivity can occur, the patient will grow accustomed to wearing the appliance a few days after receiving it.
