What is Ankylosis & Why it’s Important to deal with it

Ankylosis occurs when a baby tooth or permanent tooth gets fused to the bone and doesn’t fall out like a normal baby tooth.

If not taken care of, this can lead to serious consequences.

Dr. Salzer saw a case that shows what can occur when ankylosis is not treated properly.

In this specific case, the patient came into our practice at 9-years-old and had three missing teeth, without any permanent teeth attached to those missing teeth.

The patient came back at age 12 and the doctors began to see the baby teeth sink down, indicating that they were fused to the bone.

As a result, the doctors recommended that the teeth be extracted, but the patient chose not to have any dental treatment for ten years.

As a result, they came back to seek treatment at age 21, and the baby teeth were still there, at the same level, while the teeth around the baby teeth grew and collapsed into the space.

This is why, when you see a baby tooth that is ankylosed, you need to find out from your dentist how to deal with it immediately.
